Why Exercise Is More Than Just Exercise
When considering serious steps toward self-improvement and self-actualization, one can take a series of steps toward reaching their goals and potential. These steps may include counseling or therapy, meditation, goal planning, budgeting, and things of the like. However, one critical activity that many overlook is exercise. There are several reasons why physical activity is important. Here are a few:
Physiological Benefit
1. Exercising at least half an hour everyday, that is reaching your target heart rate and sustaining it for thirty minutes, is beneficial for both the mind and body. The hormones produced by our bodies affect emotions and exercise has been known to boost endorphins. According to a Wikipedia article , “they resemble the opiates in their abilities to produce analgesia and a sense of well-being.” When done properly, exercise can be tremendously beneficial to mental and physical health.
Confidence Booster
2. When we achieve some sort of milestone in our lives, especially ones in accordance with the goals we’ve planned for ourselves, there is a great sense of accomplishment and confidence. The same applies in two different ways with exercise. If you exercise with a certain goal in mind, whether it is to run a mile in 6 minutes or to bench press 250 pounds, once those goals are reached a person’s confidence is raised. It is also natural that with a regular and healthy exercise regimen, you will also see physical changes and improvements to your body and physical appearance. Pounds will be dropped, inches will be lost, and muscles will be more toned or defined. There isn’t much that can make one feel better than fitting into their favorite clothes or looking good in a swimsuit.
Developing Discipline
3. If you can stick to an exercise regimen, it will definitely improve your self-discipline in many other aspects in life. Whenever you tackle a difficult project at work or school, it seems the easy out is to quit or do a half-assed job. However, if you apply your accomplishments and discipline taken from a workout program, it’s easier to push through and give it everything you have. It certainly seems like a piece of cake when you realized how much pain and effort it took you to run that fast mile or to lift those extremely heavy weights. Why should anything else in life yield different results if you apply yourself?
These are few of many points when considering making exercise a part of your life. It isn’t something that you give a set amount to. There would be no benefit in saying, “I’m going to do this 6-month diet and exercise program so I can hit my goals,” only to have you quit and repeat the cycle once it’s over. Exercise should be part of any healthy and productive lifestyle. Once you get started, it becomes easier to work out without having to make it out to be some unattainable goal – it just becomes part of your life.
