Overcoming Past Demons
Do you find yourself having difficulty moving forward in jobs, relationships, and life in general? Perhaps you are victimizing yourself, as I have been for quite some time, by using negative past experiences as a crutch. It has been far too easy for many to use a bad relationship, a terrible former boss, or even neglectful parents as an excuse for all the roadblocks we’ve failed to overcome. Taking relationships as an example, I’ve encountered far too many women who claim that they’ve “put up walls” in order to protect themselves because they’ve been burned in the past. While it’s understandable that they do this, is it really any way to live a fulfilling life? Think of the progress lost and the opportunities missed when we close ourselves off from possibility. The same applies to everything else in life. For a long time, I’ve blamed abusive parents who have “set me up for failure” every time something didn’t work in my favor. When we make excuses, life begins to crumble and the only one really holding us back is ourselves. Take some time in the morning before you start your day and think about your personal roadblocks. Are there any that you might have unknowingly put in place? The key to this is being completely honest with yourself and realizing that you aren’t perfect.
